Frequently Asked Questions
What size fender do I need for my boat?
Allow at least 2.5cm of diameter for every metre of boat length, but go larger if you can. New Zealand conditions can throw up heavy chop or swell even in sheltered spots, and a bigger fender is one of the more affordable ways to protect your hull. See our fender selection guide for more detail.
How many fenders does a boat need?
At a minimum, carry enough fenders to cover your boat's widest point on both sides. If you're likely to raft up with other boats, carry extras. You'll need to protect all boats at their widest points.
Which boat fender type should I choose?
Choosing your boat fender depends on how and where you berth most often:
- Rafting up: Cylindrical boat fenders, rigged at contact points (usually around the widest part of the hull).
- Permanent marina berth: Marina fenders or a dock corner fender give you confidence to slide in every time, even in a breeze.
- Occasional docking: Cylindrical fenders with fender lines set just above the waterline suit refuelling stops, overnight ties, or unfamiliar wharves.
Can I use the same fenders for trailer boat and marina use?
Yes, cylindrical boat fenders work well for trailer boats and casual docking. For a regular berth, fit your spot with marina fenders.
How do I clean and store buoys and fenders?
Rinse buoys and fenders with fresh water. Mild soap and a soft brush will remove most scuff marks and grime. Store out of direct sunlight when possible. Check fender lines and docklines regularly for chafe and replace if worn.
