Our History

From a small riverside workshop in 1856 to a global hook brand, discover the story and people behind BKK’s obsession with making better hooks.

Why We Do What We Do.

Pushing hook design beyond what a simple fishing hook can be.

Behind every BKK hook is a team obsessed with the craft, not the sale. We live for the cycle of researching, creating and testing, always asking how far we can push what a simple hook can be. That curiosity began in 1856 when a 16-year-old member of the Zhan family forged the first BKK hook in a tiny riverside workshop in Poyang, China, serving local anglers from a smoke-filled, hand-built forge, and it still drives every new pattern we bring to life today.

It All Started With a Boy.

From a tiny riverside workshop in 1856 to a global hook brand trusted worldwide.

From those modest beginnings BKK has grown into one of the world’s most trusted hook brands, now employing roughly 600 people in factories and offices from Shanghai to Japan. A devoted crew of anglers from New Zealand, Europe, China and Southeast Asia drive the research, creation and testing of every model, combining more than 150 years of hook-making experience with modern materials and coatings to build hooks by anglers, for anglers, worldwide.

Hook Coating Technology

Learn how BKK’s advanced coatings balance penetration, abrasion resistance and corrosion protection to match different fishing environments and techniques.

SS - Superslide coating

SS - Superslide

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating that lowers friction so hooks penetrate with less force on the bite, with moderate corrosion resistance below Ultra-Antirust and Bright Tin.

UA - Ultra-Antirust coating

UA - Ultra-Antirust

Advanced anti-rust coating with very high salt corrosion resistance and hardness, sitting at the top of BKK’s protection tech. Keep Ultra-Antirust hooks away from lead items.

MT - Matte Tin coating

MT - Matte Tin

Matte pure tin layer that reduces flash to avoid spooking fish, while offering high corrosion resistance for saltwater use.

BT - Bright Tin coating

BT - Bright Tin

Shiny, smooth pure tin coating with strong saltwater corrosion resistance; its flash can help trigger bites on many saltwater hooks.

N - Nickel coating

N - Nickel

Silvery nickel finish that boosts hardness and abrasion resistance, with lower saltwater protection best suited to freshwater hooks.

BN - Black Nickel coating

BN - Black Nickel

Black-gloss nickel finish that improves hardness and abrasion resistance, camouflages hooks underwater, and offers slightly better salt resistance than standard Nickel.

F&Q

Commonly asked questions about BKK hooks, how to choose the right model, and how our technology helps you land more fish.

How are BKK hooks different from standard fishing hooks?
BKK hooks are designed and tested by dedicated anglers, combining more than 150 years of hook-making experience with modern steels, precision-forged shapes and advanced coatings like Ultra-Antirust and Superslide. The result is a range of hooks that balance penetration, strength and corrosion resistance for specific techniques rather than a one-hook-fits-all approach.
Which BKK circle hook should I choose for straylining or ledger rigs?
For general straylining and ledger rigs we recommend the Offset Heavy Circle hook (Glow and Super Slide) and Octopus Beak hook families. Offset Circle hooks are ideal when you want fast penetration and minimal effort during hook up. Do not ‘strike’ the fish, rather let it swim away and as the pressure comes on the line, the hook does the rest, often hooking them in the corner of the mouth. The Octopus Beak range requires a different fishing style and generally you will need to strike the fish to get maximum hook set.
When should I use glow coatings on my hooks?
Glow-coated hooks are most effective in murky water or low-light situations where visibility is limited. Models like the BKK Offset Heavy Circle Glow Hooks are designed for night fishing, wash fishing in dirty water and surfcasting, helping fish find the bait while still delivering reliable penetration and holding power.
How should I match hook size to my target species?
Start by matching hook size to the bait first, then consider the jaw size and power of the species you are targeting. Use lighter-gauge patterns for smaller baits and subtle presentations (think snapper, kahawai etc), and heavier-gauge patterns like the Monster Circle or Kajiki HD when you expect long, hard fights on higher drag settings (think marlin, swordfish, tuna).
How do I look after my BKK hooks to make them last longer?
After each trip, rinse hooks in fresh water, dry them thoroughly and store them in a ventilated tackle box. Avoid mixing Ultra-Antirust hooks with bare lead sinkers, replace any hook that shows damage or bluntness, and check your rigs regularly so every connection is as strong as the hook itself.
