Wash after every trip. Salt left on a reel is where problems start.

A little care after a day on the water can add years to your rods and reels. Saltwater, sand and dirt are the main enemies, Daiwa New Zealand recommends washing after every outing, not just when gear looks filthy. Below is a practical summary of their reel and rod maintenance guidance.

How to wash a reel

Tighten the drag so water is less likely to soak the drag stack. Mist the exterior with fresh water from a spray bottle, or wipe with a damp cloth, avoid blasting sealed areas. Shake, wind and oscillate moving parts, then dry with a cloth. Once dry, a thin wipe of synthetic lubricant (e.g. CRC High Performance Multilube Gel) on the exterior helps fight surface corrosion. Loosen the drag for storage and leave the reel to air dry fully.

Minimise damage on the water: cradle your outfit rather than laying it in sand, and stow gear when travelling by boat to cut salt spray exposure.

Oil: where and how much

Daiwa does not recommend aerosol penetrating lubricant sprays on or in reels. They strip grease from bearings and gears and cause longer-term harm. Oils should not go on internal mechanical parts either. Tiny amounts of oil are fine on:

• Handle knob bearings (all reels)
• Line roller bearings (spinning reels)
• Spool bearings (baitcast reels)

One drop per bearing is enough. Never put oil down the main shaft of a spinning reel, that is a common cause of a slipping anti-reverse.

Rod care

Remove the reel and clean the rod with a damp rag after every use so salt residue is gone. Dry straight away. A light synthetic lubricant wipe on blank and guides helps prevent surface corrosion.

Do

• Clean after every use
• Store rods vertically in a rack, out of thoroughfares
• Use rod bags or tubes when travelling
• Use the rod for the purpose and line/cast weight it was designed for
• Carry butt-first through bush or snaggy ground

Don’t

• Store rods bent or loaded, especially in a hot car (they can take a permanent set)
• Leave rods on the ground or in busy walkways
• Use the rod to yank hooks or lures from trees or snags
• Bend the blank by hand; load only with line through the guides, ideally under ~60°

Storage

Cool, dry and out of direct sun. Damp ute trays and baking vehicles fade finishes, soften adhesives and invite corrosion. Back the drag off when the reel is not in use so washers are not left compressed.

When to book a service

If the drag feels gritty, the handle binds, the reel was dunked, or Magsealed parts need attention, book a service rather than forcing things. Magsealed servicing should go through Daiwa New Zealand.
